Storing natural gas in salt is well established across the world, with over 70 facilities in operation and an unblemished safety record. There has never been a major incident at an underground gas storage facility in the UK since the first was brought on line in 1959 at Hornsea, Yorkshire.
The Underground Natural Gas Storage Facility at Preesall will make a significant difference to the UK’s gas storage infrastructure, and therefore to the security of future energy sources across the country.
In 2011 we carried out a major statutory consultation to gain the views of local residents and other interested organisations. Following this we modified our plans and submitted our application to the Planning Inspectorate.
Our project was granted a Development Consent Order on 17 July 2015.
