Storing natural gas in salt is well established across the world, with over 70 facilities in operation and an unblemished safety record.
The Underground Natural Gas Storage Facility at Preesall would make a significant difference to the UK’s gas storage infrastructure, and therefore to the security of future energy sources across the country.
We carried out a major statutory consultation in 2011 where we received the views of residents and other interested organisations regarding our proposals.
As a result of this feedback we modified our plans, including adding additional safety precautions such as 24/7 onsite security.
We then submitted them to the Planning Inspectorate for consideration, who accepted our application for examination on 23 December 2011.
The application was granted consent on 17 July 2015.
